Tune-up suggestions


There are third party apps that you can use to improve Windows' performance. If you want to do it on your own, here are some Redmond suggestions:

  • Delete programs you never use

  • Limit how many programs load at startup

  • Defragment your hard drive

  • Clean up your hard disk

  • Run fewer programs at the same time

  • Turn off visual effects

  • Restart regularly

  • Add more memory

  • Check for viruses and spyware

  • Check your computer’s speed

  • Disable services you don’t need

  • Don’t settle for slow

Rename Files

Add Info


When you download pictures from your digital camera, they end up with incomprehensible name such as IMG_0284.JPG, or _MG_2640.CR2.

To make them more useful:


  1. Select all those files from Xmas. You can use Ctrl to group them, or use Ctrl+A to select all the files in that folder.

  2. Right click the selection and choose Rename.

  3. Pick a descriptive title, such as 2014 Xmas Party.

  4. Hit Enter

  5. All of the selected files will be renamed "2014 Xmas Party.JPG”, "2014 Xmas Party.CR2”, "2014 Xmas Party(2).JPG”, "2014 Xmas Party(2).CR2”, "2014 Xmas Party(3).JPG” "2014 Xmas Party(3).CR2”.

    The extensions will remain the same.

Windows Check Boxes

Add check boxes to file views to make it easier to select several files at once, which can be useful if it is difficult for you to hold the CTRL key while clicking to select multiple files.

Step 1: Go to Control Panel>Appearance and Personalization>Click Folder Options.

Step 2: Click View tab and under Advanced Settings, Select Use Check boxes to select items

Synch Time

Time Server


Things I've forgotten or never knew.

  1. Double click on the date and time on the taskbar to open the time applet.

  2. Click on the Internet Time tab.

  3. Choose a time server, and click on the Update Now button.

As long as you are connected to the internet, Windows will attempt to synchronize the time once per week.
You can type the name of a time server if you want to use one that is not listed. Only time servers that use the Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) will work. Inserting an Internet address that uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) will not work. The time server time.windows.com is operated by Microsoft. The time server time.nist.gov is operated by the U.S. government. Other time servers provided by your computer's manufacturer might also be listed.

(Monaco is an embeddable font)

Andale.ttf (Mono) has a dotted 0

Seagullscientific.com has a font called Crystal

Windows has a free font editor. Type eudcedit on the Start>Run line.
Vic Laurie has a description of the Private Character Editor- Eudcedit

You could also use the EQ field to create a strike through and assign it to an AutoCorrect entry.

The easiest is, probably Alt+0216 or Alt+0248 It's a Latin "oh" with stroke, but it looks close.

Click Settings in the Performance section.



On the Visual Effects tab, check "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop".

A PowerPoint show can be set up to run automatically when it is opened.

To do this, you could go to File>Save As and choose PowerPoint Show (*.pps) from the Save as type: list.

Another way is to change the extension (the three letters that appear after a file name such as Report.DOC).

PowerPoint uses .PPT for normal files, .POT for templates.

A PowerPoint show uses .PPS.

Microsoft "dumbed down" Windows Explorer so that, by default, extensions are not displayed.

To see them:
  1. Go to Windows Explorer.
  2. On the Menu bar go to Tools>Folder Options
    (Organize>Folder and Search Options in Vista)
  3. Click on the View tab.
  4. In the Advanced settings list, remove the check mark from "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  5. OK your way out.
To change a regular PowerPoint file to a show:
  1. Locate the file in Windows Explorer.
  2. Right click the file name and choose Rename.
  3. Touch the End key on the keyboard and the Backspace three times.
  4. Enter the letters PPS
  5. Hit Enter.
You now have a PowerPoint show that will automatically run when it is opened.

Verbose Status


The whole story


If you have trouble with slow startup, shutdown, logon, or logoff, you might try this procedure.


This setting allows you to configure Windows so that you receive verbose startup, shutdown, logon, and logoff status messages!




  1. Go to Run and enter Regedit

  2. Find or create the key in

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

  3. To enable verbose status messages create a new DWORD value called "verbosestatus" and set it to "1".


  4. In order to see the messages, an additional value called "DisableStatusMessages" should be set to "0".


  5. Restart Windows.
